95% of the websites we build here at We Are Hex, and around 30%of sites on the entire web, are powered by WordPress. We make it our business to ensure we’re up to speed with the latest WP releases, updates and innovations and use that knowledge to develop high-quality websites for our clients.

WordPress 5.4

WordPress 5.4, or “Adderley” named in honor of the celebrated American jazz trumpeter, Nat Adderley, officially launched recently. Adderley brings with it a host of new features, faster speeds, and smoother processes. Updates such as these present new opportunities to refresh existing pages and create engaging content with the latest set of tools to explore your website’s full potential.

So what’s new?

The latest release comes with much improvement and focuses on existing blocks, great news for content creators. The update brings two new blocks, Social Icons, and Buttons, providing fast and easy interactive features. There are continued improvements to the functionality of embedded media, compatible with the world’s top media services including the addition of TikTok. Overall, you will find an increase in the versatility of the blocks and the creative control you have over them.

An additional new feature is the ability to localise text change colour to individual words and letters inside a paragraph block. Previously you will have only been able to apply a colour change to the entire text within a paragraph block.

Processes have been streamlined for placing and replacing multimedia in every block whilst navigation has been simplified. The editor now loads 14% faster along with a 51% faster time-to-type. Functionality surrounding Privacy has also been enhanced. WP 5.4 makes data regulation compliance even easier, providing a clearer picture of how user data is handled.

There is a wealth of updates for Developers. Custom fields can be added to menu items without the need for writing custom walkers or using a plugin. The WordPress 5.4 Field Guide offers a detailed look at how all the latest changes will relate to Dev work.
